I about lost my mind when I saw that Amazon now has a clothing line from J. Crew — J. Crew Mercantile.
I LOVE J. Crew, but it isn’t always the most budget friendly, ya know? And since we’re starting some major renovations on our house, it’s imperative that I save as much money as I can right now to put toward things like grass, floors, and the removal of a wall.
However, after scrolling through the label’s new offerings on Amazon, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the pricing. There are some things that are priced a bit high, but I also consider those to be wardrobe staples and investment pieces. Those items will last for years to come, carry you through all seasons, and pair well with nearly anything.
I ordered a Prime Wardrobe box recently to try items from J. Crew Mercantile. All of the pieces I received were high quality, beautiful, and on trend.
Plus, I really wanted to make this into a capsule wardrobe, so I selected pieces that would be easily interchangeable to maximize the number of outfits I could make.
Here’s how I created 15 looks using eight pieces from the line. Detailed descriptions on each piece are below.
Long Pant in Black
The first pair of pants I tried on were the black skinny trousers. These are great for the office and pair well with a basic white button down blouse and blazer (like the ones pictured above) for a classic, sophisticated look that never goes out of style. Skinny black pants like these are definitely a closet staple for me. I ordered my regular size, which is an 8, but they fit a little snug. I suggest sizing up one size in these.
Chambray Button Down Shirt
What I love about this shirt is the fact that it is thicker than most chambray tops I’ve tried. Also, it is versatile in that it can be dressed up for the office with the black trousers I mentioned above, or dressed down with jeans for weekend adventures. One of my favorite pairings is this top with the olive green quilted vest. I found that it fits true to size (TTS).
Puffer Vest in Deep Moss
Unlike many puffer vests, this one is light, making it perfect for layering — which is exactly what I like to do with it. The mossy green looks great over the light wash of the chambray shirt, as well as the white button down and the basic striped t-shirt from the collection. There are so many ways you can wear this piece to create different looks.
Schoolboy Blazer in Camel
This is the perfect blazer, in my opinion. It is a bit pricey, but it is one of those staple, investment pieces I was talking about earlier. It is a tailored fit, which gives you a defined waistline, and the camel color is neutral and beautiful. Pair it with black trousers for work or dress it down for casual Friday with jeans. I ordered my normal size 8 and it fit perfectly.
Oxford Button Down Shirt in White
A nice, white button down is definitely a must-have in any wardrobe. This one from J. Crew Mercantile is of nice quality and priced fairly — it will be something you get a lot of wear out of for seasons to come. It does fit TTS.
Highrise Skinny Jean
When I say that these are the best jeans I have ever put on my body, I mean it. I love, love, love that they come up above my belly button and basically suck in everything. Plus, they are comfortable and the three-button closure gives them a unique look — different from a basic button and zipper fly. I ordered my normal size 29 and they fit wonderfully.
Short Sleeve V-Neck T-Shirt
I always need a basic white T. Seriously, I burn through them like nothing else because it’s so easy to toss one on with any outfit and be done. Plus, I am very particular about them. I like these from J. Crew Mercantile because they are inexpensive, thin (I don’t like thick T-shirts), and they hit at the hip. I paired this white one with the blazer above for a classic, refined look. I also popped it on under the chambray button down for the 90s grunge look that calls my name. These fit TTS.
Long Sleeve Striped Boatneck T-Shirt
Like the white T-shirt above, this striped boatneck T is perfect for layering or wearing solo. It looks great on its own, under the mossy green vest, or even with the blazer. It’s fall, folks, don’t be afraid to layer it up! This top also fits TTS.
. . .
That’s it, friends! I hope you enjoyed this glimpse at how I created a capsule wardrobe using eight pieces from J. Crew Mercantile. I had a lot of fun developing these looks and showing you what I would actually wear on a daily basis.
